Ingredients Needed for Caprese on a Stick

This is a great, easy finger appetizer. I came up with it because I love Caprese but it was difficult to serve at large parties. Putting the same ingredients on a toothpick yielded great results.

1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved : These little gems are perfect for skewering due to their sweetness and juiciness. Halving them enhances their flavor and ensures they fit nicely on your toothpick. Whether you prefer red or yellow, both varieties offer vibrant color and a burst of freshness.

1 (6 ounce) package fresh basil leaves :  Don’t forget the fresh basil leaves! Their aromatic quality adds a lovely herbal note to the dish. Choose bright, fragrant leaves to ensure the best flavor. If the leaves are large, simply fold them in half or tear them to fit on the skewer perfectly.

1 (16 ounce) package small fresh mozzarella balls : Fresh Mozzarella Cheese : Starting with the star ingredient—fresh mozzarella cheese! For Caprese on a Stick, using small mozzarella balls, also known as ciliegine, adds a delightful creaminess.

They’re easy to skewer and have a mild flavor that pairs well with the other ingredients. When selecting mozzarella, look for those that are packed in water to ensure freshness.

Toothpicks , 3 tablespoons olive oil , salt and pepper to taste .
Balsamic Glaze :  This tangy-sweet drizzle elevates the flavors of the dish. You can easily make your own by reducing balsamic vinegar, or opt for a store-bought version for convenience.

To begin, slice the fresh mozzarella balls if they aren’t already bite-sized. If using larger mozzarella, cut them into smaller portions that match the size of the halved cherry tomatoes.  Halving the tomatoes also enhances their flavor by exposing more surface area for the ingredients to reach.

Assembling the Skewers:  Using toothpicks, start with a half tomato, followed by a fresh basil leaf, and finish with a mozzarella ball. Repeat until all ingredients are used. Drizzle the olive oil over the tomato, cheese and basil, leaving the end of the toothpick clean. Sprinkle with salt and pepper

Finally, drizzle the assembled skewers with balsamic glaze to add an irresistible tangy-sweet finish. This simple addition elevates the dish, making it ripe with flavor.  Arrange the skewers on a large platter, alternating the colors for an eye-catching effect.

Variations and Customizations

Adding Prosciutto or ham : For those who crave a bit more flavor, consider adding prosciutto to your Caprese on a Stick. This salty cured meat complements the sweet cherry tomatoes and creamy mozzarella perfectly.

Simply fold or roll a slice of prosciutto and nestle it between the tomato and mozzarella on your skewer. It adds a savory richness that takes the classic appetizer to new heights.
